The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Kenny Pickett to be an extension of the stability that Ben Roethlisberger brought to the franchise for nearly two decades.
That starts with, well, being the starting quarterback for a similar amount of time.
And if that's going to happen, Pickett has some major work to do in one key area according to Big Ben:
'He Has To See A Little Bit'
"He’s got to work on his pocket escapability a little bit," former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said on a recent episode of his podcast: Footbahlin. "Like you always talk about escaping through the back door. He escapes to trouble sometimes. Runs to darkness. He has to see a little bit.”
Now, this a problem that has carried over from college, reared it's ugly head last season, and continues to be a learning curve for Pickett in the NFL. No clip better illustrates that then former NFL QB J.T. O'Sullivan breaking down a horrible sack that Kenny took last season:
Now if that was just a rookie mistake, it would be no big deal, but it continues to plague Kenny, and it is part of the reason the offense struggles at times, making the line look worse then they are, especially a few weeks ago in Houston:
Pickett isn't even half way through his second year, and just turned 25 over the summer. So, time is on his side, but this is a flaw that has to change, and quickly. Nothing kills a drive faster than a bad sack, especially if it was one that could and should have been avoided by the quarterback.
So we'll see how the rest of the season goes. Kenny showed tremendous improvement after the bye week last season, with Steelers fans hoping for a replica in year two.
