Christmas in May anyone?
Shortly after the breaking news that Netflix would livestream two Christmas Day games exclusively, Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report reported that the Steelers will host one of them:
But the announcement comes with a price for those who are pure cable users:
Steelers to host Chiefs on Christmas
As the internet and technology evolve, gone are the days of the cable box. With Amazon Prime and Peacock holding exclusive rights to games over the past few years, it was only a matter of time before the titan of streaming, Netflix was sure to be involved.
For many people, this is no issue, as the world's most popular streaming service is already a part of their subscription package. But for those who are traditional in their NFL consumption, the news isn't exactly the Christmas gift they hoped for when they found out their favorite team was playing on the big day.
The good news is, like most if not all streaming services, Netflix offers a free trial, meaning as long as you have internet, you will be able to watch the game.
Streaming companies bank on you forgetting to cancel your sub before the recurring dates kick in, but if you stay on top of things, it will be easy.
As for the game itself, anytime you play the defending champions, it's a big deal. But when you play them on one of the most popular holidays in the world, in a stand-alone window, and on a service that hundreds of millions of users across the globe use, it will be monumental. Two of the biggest brands in the sport, putting these two together on such a big day is a no-brainer in marketing.
Now, you may be wondering, does this mean football will be played on a Wedensday? To which the answer is yes. The NFL announced earlier in the year that they no longer would let the calendar dictate when and if they play on Christmas, and that likely will be the case for the foreseeable future.
But you might ask, well how is playing on Wednesday safe after the team just played on Sunday?
The NFL has that covered:
The tweet holds for Pittsburgh, meaning they could very well have two back-to-back primetime games in December.
The NFL officially releases the schedule later tonight, on Wednesday, May 15th at 8:00 pm Eastern.
