Steelers’ release of a veteran weapon that some didn’t see coming allows Omar Khan to take a swing at a WR who now wants a trade
It all adds up.
The Pittsburgh Steelers signed Robert Woods this offseason in hopes that he would be a veteran presence with some gas left in the tank.
It turned out, however, that Woods was completely unremarkable during his few months in Pittsburgh, and surprisingly to some, he was released on Tuesday.
But it could make way for another veteran WR, who wants a new deal and would be a perfect fit for the Steelers.
Robert Woods’ release opens the door for a Jakobi Meyers trade
You can go from OTAs to minicamp, to Latrobe to the preseason, and if you find a Robert Woods highlight, that would be news to me. He simply wasn’t featured, talked about, or heard of throughout the entire offseason.
And I understand that he offers a veteran presence, and he can be a leader, but you have to show you can still play, and I’m not sure he did that in his short Steelers tenure. So the question becomes: who replaces him?
In the interim, it will be a player like Ben Skowronek or someone else towards the backend of the roster. But in the long term, it opens the door to trading for a proven difference maker via WR Jakobi Meyers.
It’s no secret that the Steelers have been in the trade market even after the blockbuster swing that was DK Metcalf. Because weeks later, they traded away their WR No.2 via George Pickens, and that spot has yet to be filled, no matter what the team says about how bullish they are on their current group.
The Steelers need an easy button on offense. Someone with proven ability to separate and win over the middle of the field. That just so happens to be Meyers’ forte. A perfect Z WR with excellent blocking and route running, he is an ideal pairing alongside DK Metcalf in Arthur Smith’s offense.
Now, he’s headed into the final year of his deal and wants a new contract. That’s the whole resason Meyers requested a trade. But the Steelers have more than enough cap space to accommodate a WR No.2 contract.
Oh and a Meyers trade will come much cheaper in terms of draft capital when comparing him to the Metcalfs of the world or what Terry McLaurin would have fetched.
Seems like a no-brainer for the Steelers.
