It appeared as if Terrell Edmunds and the Steelers were destined for divorce after Pittsburgh declined Edmunds' fifth-year option before the start of the 2021 season. The former first-round pick had yet to live up to his first-round billing as a player; so, at the time, it made complete sense.

And it still makes complete sense to this day. But that won't stop the Steelers from attempting to re-sign the fifth-year safety.

Per 93.7 The Fan's Andrew Fillipponi, the Steelers will attempt to re-sign Edmunds before he hits the free agent market on March 16. Or March 14, technically.

Most Steelers fans aren't the biggest fan (no pun intended) of Edmunds, but the strong safety has shown good improvement over the last couple of years. Said improvement is not only a mark of Edmunds' personal development. It can also be attributed to the acquisition of Minkah Fitzpatrick via the 2019 trade that brought him to Pittsburgh. Edmunds was being asked to do a lot -especially in coverage- over the first couple years of his career. Fitzpatrick's arrival not only took a lot of the pressure and responsibilities out of Edmunds' hands, but it also allowed Edmunds to settle into the aforementioned strong safety position, where he is much more comfortable.

Pittsburgh does have a backup plan in case things go awry, however. Per Fillipponi, the Steelers will make a push to sign Buccaneers free agent safety Jordan Whitehead if they can't work out a deal with Edmunds. This part of Fillipponi's report is wild timing considering ESPN literally labeled Whitehead as a perfect fit for Pittsburgh on Thursday morning, just hours before.

Either way, the Steelers have a direction and a plan when it comes to the strong safety position, but only time will tell which one works out.
