The Baltimore Ravens have been among the most talked about teams in the 2023 NFL offseason.
What often would be flummoxing to Steeler fans, the conversation has instead been delightful, as the Ravens and Lamar Jackson continue to struggle to find common ground on a contract extension.
With Jackson recently requesting a trade, it seemed the Ravens were in Defcon one when it came to the future of their franchise. That was until they had an Easter surprise for everyone on Sunday.
Per multiple reporters of NFL Media, The Baltimore Ravens have officially signed free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., to a one-year contract.
I mean seriously?
I like Odell Beckham Jr. as much as the next guy. His game-breaking traits and insane catch radius have created some of the best highlights in NFL history, literally.
But the truth is, OBJ is not worth anything close to the figure that he will earn as part of the Baltimore Ravens.
From NFL.com's official release:
The deal includes a $13.835 million signing bonus, $1.165 million base salary and $3 million in reachable incentives, Pelissero added. The veteran will make at least $15 million and as much as $18 million.
I'm sorry but there's no way OBJ is worth a guaranteed $15 million dollar salary at this point in his career.
The star receiver is on the wrong side of 30 and now has two ACL tears, with his most recent forcing him to miss the entirety of the 2022 NFL season.
And yes, I'm aware that the Ravens can maneuver the deal having smaller implications on the cap, but what does it say about Lamar and the front office from a relationship standpoint when you vastly overpay a free agent but are holding firm on underpaying your star quarterback?
Maybe this was the catalyst that re-signs Lamar Jackson, giving him proof the organization is behind him and willing to add viable pass-catching options.
But if they really wanted to show they believed in him, they would have already signed the 26-year-old former NFL MVP.
In our daily lives, we have our to-do lists. Certain things are more pertinent than others, but they all carry weight.
Did the Baltimore Ravens need help at receiver?
Undoubtedly.
But what's more important, your wide receiver room, or the face of the franchise?
Even from a Steelers viewpoint, it's hard not to say the Ravens don't have their priorities mixed up.
