The Pittsburgh Steelers are finalizing their coaching staff. The big hires of offensive, defensive, and special teams coordinators have been made and most of the position coaches have been named as well.

The only problem is, a lot of these hirings have one thing in common, starting all the way at the top with Mike McCarthy: they didn’t receive rave reviews from their former place of employment. After hiring their assistant head coach and secondary coach, that has continued.

Steelers hire assistant head coach, special teams coach Joe Whitt Jr.

A lot of people have been upset with the Steelers hires because most, if not all have had history coaching under Mike McCarthy. To me, that’s not a big deal, that’s just how the NFL works. What matters is how they performed under McCarthy or since leaving.

Well wheter it was special teams coordinator Danny Crossman during his time with the Miami Dolphins, or Patrick Graham during his time with the Raiders, or now, Joe Whitt Jr., the numbers that matter just don’t look good. Don’t take my word for it, here is Josh Taylor of A to Z Sports, Washington.

“Steelers fans should be concerned about the hire of Joe Whitt Jr. after seeing how last season unfolded in Washington. The Commanders’ defense was already bad in 2024, and it took another step back in 2025. Washington became the first team to lose four games in a row by 21 points or more, which led to Whitt Jr. finally losing his play-calling duties. He was sent up to the booth for the rest of the season since Dan Quinn didn’t have it in him to completely fire him, being his long-time friend in the league. It sounds like another McCarthy loyalty hire, which is what got Quinn and the Commanders in the slump they’re in right now.” – Taylor

Look, it’s far too early to make any final declarations about how the 2026 season will turn out. That being said, when you are presented purely with the facts of the situation, it’s hard to be totally optimistic about the staff in Pittsburgh come the fall.
