Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin made some comments on Tuesday that are going to be talked about a lot this week.
Tomlin was asked by a reporter about the rumor of an altercation between wide receiver Diontae Johnson and quarterback Mitch Trubisky leading to the decision to bench Trubisky in favor of rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett.
Instead of confirming or denying the rumor, Tomlin explained that even if it was true, he wouldn't share it with reporters.
"Our business is our business," said Tomlin.
"If it transpired, it's good it probably means there's a couple of guys who wanted to win," added Tomlin. "If it didn't transpire, it probably means that it should have. Because we're aggressively pursuing victory. And sometimes that's emotional."
I know there's been some criticism of Tomlin this season — and much of that has been deserved — but I thought he handled that question absolutely perfectly.
Arguments and disagreements happen between teammates. Sometimes it's indicative of problems and sometimes it's not.
I always think of Peyton Manning and center Jeff Saturday getting into it with each other on the sideline when they were with the Colts when rumors of a locker room spat pop up.
If that's someone other than Peyton in that video, it becomes a huge deal.
But Peyton made a great point in that video. When he or Saturday had an issue with each other, they confronted each other man to man, not through the media. When it happens through the media, that's usually when there are major problems.
Tomlin did a great job of relaying that sentiment on Tuesday. Arguments aren't always bad. Sometimes they help a team get out of a slump. Maybe that's why the Steelers were able to get a win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this past weekend.
Either way, Tomlin deserves credit for how he handled a tough question.
