A good sign.

It was a busy Tuesday morning for the Pittsburgh Steelers. With news coming down that safety DeShon Elliott is likely to miss a few weeks with an MCL sprain, the team decided to sign former first-round pick Jabrill Peppers to fill in at safety and add another versatile DB.

But what about the other players that left the game early or didn’t play in Week 1? Derrick Harmon is still out, per Mike Tomlin. Malik Harrison, who exited with a knee injury, is also out. But Joey Porter Jr. and Nick Herbig?

Mike Tomlin was much more optimistic about those two, saying there is a good chance they play in the home opener against the Seattle Seahawks.

Mike Tomlin optimistic about Nick Herbig, Joey Porter Jr. for Week 2

“I’ll quickly give you an injury report,” said Tomlin during his weekly address on Tuesday. “Derrick Harmon [you] can anticipate him continuing to be out this week with his knee. DeShon Elliott, the same with his knee. Malik Harrison, the same with his knee. And so those are three guys that are potentially scheduled to be out as I sit here today. . .

” . . Joey Porter wasn’t able to finish the game with a hamstring. Optimistic about his availability, but I’ll let the quality of his work and the amount of his work during the week be our guide there. And really optimistic and hopeful about Nick Herbig being available for us this week.”

Herbig has been more of DPR or designated pass rusher during his time with the Steelers, but watching the way the Jets caved in that front line, Pittsburgh can use all the help they can find along the defensive line.

Porter Jr. is the Steelers’ top outside corner, however. As thin as the Steelers were before the Peppers signing, the team is even lighter at corner. Luckily, Jalen Ramsey’s versatility helped them in Week 1. When Porter Jr. went out, he moved from playing safety and slot corner to outside corner.

Either way, it’s a good sign for the defense ahead of Week 2.
