It would be a bad first move for Mike McCarthy.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have their head coach in place, and while they await the future of the quarterback position, they are busy at work finding their coordinators. While Mike McCarthy confirmed he will call plays, the big move will be naming his defensive coordinator.

Well, if his first hire is the man the Steelers are slated to interview, it could be a massive mistake.

Steelers interviewing Commanders defensive pass game coordinator Jason Simmons for defensive coordinator position

“Commanders defensive pass-game coordinator Jason Simmons is interviewing for Steelers defensive coordinator today, per source. Simmons, a fifth-round pick by the Steelers in 1998, was a secondary coach for Mike McCarthy in Green Bay from 2011-15.” – Jeremy Fowler, ESPN

Simmons would be a legacy hire and someone who brings family to the Steelers staff, given his relationship with Mike McCarthy. However, the NFL is what have you done for me lately league, and lately, Simmons’ defense has been struggling.

Don’t take my word for it, though. Here is A to Z Sports Washington Commanders writer Josh Taylor.

“Jason Simmons wouldn’t be a great hire in my opinion, and seems more like a legacy and familiar-face hire by McCarthy if that’s the route he takes. The Commanders’ passing defense struggled all season long and allowed the fifth-most passing yards in the NFL. Explosive plays on the backend were one of the biggest flaws on the defense, and we saw cornerback Mike Sainristil take a huge step back in his second season.

“It sounds like the Commanders want Daronte Jones to bring in his own staff as the new defensive coordinator, so Simmons coming back seems unlikely, and he has a clear path to join the Steelers, but that shouldn’t be the move for a defense that underperformed with the talent on the roster.” – Taylor
