Just because Pittsburgh Steelers HC Mike Tomlin said Russell Wilson is in pole position for starting QB, it doesn't mean Justin Fields is the for sure backup.

That's because we seldom see things written on paper in the spring mirror what we see in the fall.

In fact, if you listened closely to what Coach Tomlin said, you could make a case that this QB competition will be a lot closer in September than it is in March:

Fields will be allowed to compete for starting job

"Rest assured, when it's time to compete, Justin [Fields] will be given an opportunity to compete and we'll allow those guys to sort themselves out," Tomlin told reporters regarding the QB situation at the league owners' meetings. "But I thought it was appropriate to describe it in a way for when we get started. Russell's in pole position, and I think his body of work justifies that. And just from my conversations with Justin, he is excited about working alongside Russell and learning some of those veteran tricks of the trade from behind a guy who has been around for over a decade."

Per usual, Coach Tomlin articulated the QB situation in a way that makes both players feel good. He gave Wilson assurance by knowing he starts atop the list, all the while ensuring an opportunity for Fields.

The weeks leading up to the 2024 season will be very interesting, as this year's training camp in Latrobe sets up something not seen in Pittsburgh for some time:

A true QB battle.
