In a recent episode of the already-famous podcast Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger, the former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback felt a little bit weird to not be the team's quarterback that was facing Tom Brady in his visit to town.
"It was weird, weird seeing him there and not being across the field from him."
And while Big Ben says that weirdness won't spark any sort of competitor spark within him, he won't hold back from sharing his thoughts on the quarterback "controversy" going on in Pittsburgh.
When Kenny Pickett was ruled out with a concussion on Sunday, Mitch Trubisky looked ready to go for the Steelers. The veteran quarterback sealed the win with an impressive performance. In fact, despite totaling only 12 pass attempts, it might've been one of the best games of his career.
"I thought that Mitch played as well as I've ever seen him play," said Roethlisberger in the episode. "The play that saved the game, that won it for the Steelers was when a bad snap happened […] For Mitch to recover that ball was the play of the game."
"For a guy that got benched," added Big Ben of Trubisky's second effort on that very play, "to still show that kind of heart to want to win for that team and even for the fans that have been booing him."
But that isn't enough for Roethlisberger to think the Steelers need to walk back on their decision as to who is QB1. And under his impression, Mike Tomlin's decision to keep Pickett as the starter is the right one.
"I don't think Mitch is under the illusion he's going to win the job back," said Roethlisberger. "If Kenny is cleared to play, Kenny is starting."
On Tuesday, Mike Tomlin announced that if the rookie quarterback is cleared to play, he will be the guy.
That is a big if considering the NFL is being extra cautious with concussions after the Tua Tagovailoa debacle. The team will likely not be sure about his status until late in the week.
But Steelers fans should be happy about Trubisky being ready to go when the team asked him to step up. That was a great moment for a guy that wanted to win badly on Sunday.
