Joey Porter exposes Steelers’ legend Ben Roethlisberger with telling comments that may hurt his first ballot Hall of Fame bid
Joey Porter didn’t hold back on the Super Bowl-winning quarterback and future Hall of Famer.
If we know anything about the Hall of Fame voting process after last week’s NFL Honors, it’s that you better have a squeaky clean resume if you want to get in on the first ballot. Look no further than Bill Belichick being left off the list despite being the NFL leader in terms of Super Bowl wins as a head coach.
Well, for the first time, Pittsburgh Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger is eligible to join the Hall of Fame. He has the chance to get on the first ballot for the 2027 class, but his candidacy may have just taken a hit when you hear what his former teammate Joey Porter had to say about him.
Joey Porter rips Ben Roethlisberger as Steelers teammate
Until Wednesday morning, you would be hard pressed to find a sound bite or a clip of one of Roethlisberger’s teammates or former coaches talking bad about him. He has always been lauded as a locker room guy and one of the toughest players on a team. Then came Joey Porter.
“Seven [Ben Roethlisberger] definitely broke the Brotherhood,” Porter said via Cam Heyward’s Not Just Football podcast on YouTube. “The expletive that seven did…That we don’t talk about…He should never grab a microphone and really talk Steelers business, because if we talk Steelers business, his ass is foul of all foul, like the shit that he did is foul of all foul.”
“He’s not a good teammate. Won a Super Bowl with him, but the person, he’s just not a good teammate. Like he knows that. Anybody in the Steelers building knows that, but we protected him, because I have only won one Super Bowl, and that was my quarterback. So do I love my quarterback? Yes, but is he a good person…?”
How Joey Porter’s comments can hurt Ben Roethlisberger’s Hall of Fame nomination
The Pro Football Hall of Fame has a very strict criteria now, and they limit the amount of names who can get in any given year. If you look at the career accolades, there is no doubt that Big Ben will be in Canton and potentially on the first ballot.
However, the Hall of Fame has always taken off the field aspects into consideration. They did it with Ken Stabler and Joe Namath, and they will likely do it next year with Antonio Brown. The only question is, will they also do it with Big Ben?
Mason Rudolph piles on Big Ben as a bad teammate
The comment from Rudolph should come as no surprise. While we haven’t seen him come out directly against Big Ben the way he did in that Instagram comment, we know that he and Roethlisberger didn’t have the best relationship, as Ben wasn’t exactly the mentor type.
We’ll see if the floodgates have opened after Porter’s reveal.
