After a surprising air of secrecy around the press conference, Pittsburgh Steelers owner Art Rooney II took the podium to make his special announcement on Tuesday.

Those in attendance were told to not post pictures or videos of the event as the team would be providing those later. This only added to speculation around the whole thing, including theories about new jerseys being released.

However, joining Rooney II was a legendary player that immediately gave fans a clue about what it was all about.

Franco Harris' number 32 will be officially retired by the Steelers this season.

The timing of the decision isn't random at all as the team is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Immaculate Reception. The ceremony will take place on the 24th of December at the Steelers' game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

How perfect is that?

"I know this consideration was a tough one," said Harris, the protagonist of one of the most iconic moments in NFL history. "There are a number of players that could have been honored."

The Steelers have only retired three numbers in franchise history, including Harris' 32. Previously, Pittsburgh had retired Joe Greene's 75 and Ernie Stautner's 70.

Franco Harris played 165 games for the Steelers and racked up 11,950 yards and 91 touchdowns on the ground. For over a decade, he averaged over four yards per attempt. As a pass catcher, he also added 2,284 yards and nine touchdowns.

But Pittsburgh fans – and NFL fans – remember one specific play above all the rest. The immaculate reception. By now, I'm sure you've seen the play time and time again. But many are still surprised to find out there's an All-22 angle of the legendary moment.

By the way, the Steelers' legend is also getting commemorated with an episode of A Football Life. Rod Woodson will also get one during the show's next season.
