The Pittsburgh Steelers are in the middle of putting together the best 53 men they can for the 2023 season.
Oftentimes, that means when you get to camp, things aren't always as they seem and changes have to be made.
Mike Tomlin seemingly admitted that when asked about the recent acquisition of a former Pro Bowler:
Mike Tomlin: "There's a Myriad of Reasons"
Following the last practice of the week on Sunday, Mike Tomlin was asked about the acquisition of Kwon Alexander. A former Pro Bowler and a coverage linebacker that Pittsburgh desperately needs, Tomlin was candid in his reasoning:
"You know, we're interested in competition and so, we'll continue to have an eye out for that," said Tomlin. "But it's not a new discussion, we've been in communication with Kwon and his people for the better part of the summer…
"…Sometimes you want to wait on decision making in an effort to get quality looks at some of the young people that you're working with, etc. There's a myriad of reasons why we have certain timing regarding acquisitions or decisions."
Now, Tomlin didn't mean to throw any shade at the young inside linebackers, but he just told you the looks they are giving in practice aren't good enough right now. Mark Robinson has looked better, but he still struggles in coverage scenarios, along with players like Nick Kwiatkoski, Tanner Muse, and Chappell Russell.
And there's nothing wrong with that. Tomlin and GM Omar Khan have one responsibility:
Build the most competitive roster. Something Alexander will certainly help do:
Still only 28 years old, Alexander has been around the block in the league, but that was in large part due to injury. But he answered those durability questions last year, playing in all 17 games for the New York Jets.
We'll see how he ingratiates himself into the defense starting today when the pads officially come on in Latrobe.
Steelers’ offense continues to have too much icing and not enough cake
A little more substance would be appreciated
