Steelers will have to wait even longer if they want to hire top head coaching candidate following recent round of NFL playoffs
If the Steelers really want one of the top names in the cycle, they will be waiting a while.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have shown intrigue in plenty of names ever since Mike Tomlin stepped down from his role as head coach. There have already been twists and turns in their search, especially after the bombshell decision from the Buffalo Bills on Monday morning.
What’s clear, is that the Steelers have a type. Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher, and Mike Tomlin all come from the defensive side of the ball. The majority of the candidates with whom the Steelers have met or requested interviews with have come from the defensive side of the ball.
There is one who checks every box for the Steelers, however. Only, Pittsburgh will have to keep waiting if they want him as head coach.
Steelers will have to wait to hire Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula
“Rams DC Chris Shula and OC Mike LaFleur also now will have to wait to do second head coach interviews. So all Rams assistant coaches now on hold for hiring until next Monday, at least.” – Adam Schefter, ESPN
To me, Shula should be the top candidate for the Steelers’ head coaching vacancy. Look no further than what his defense did Sunday night against the Chicago Bears as evidence. Here he stood, on the road against one of the hottest HC-QB duos in the league, with a bad and injured secondary, and he called one of the best games of his life.
He coordinated a defense that stifled the Bears’ rushing attack and prevented them from converting on third down at a high clip. He forced Caleb Williams into three interceptions, and he held the Bears to just 17 total points through overtime. Honestly, it wouldn’t have even been that many points if not for one of the wildest plays of the season.
So if he’s the man for the job, the Steelers will have to wait. In my opinion, they should be in no rush whatsoever.
Why Chris Shula is the perfect hire for the Steelers
No other candidate checks the boxes the way that Shula does. He’s a young, unproven defensive coordinator with a football pedigree. His grandfather is the great Don Shula, yet he has worked his way up through the ranks and has led one of the league’s best units despite obvious lapses in personnel in the secondary.
From a culture standpoint, you can tell by his actions on the sideline and the way he speaks that he is all ball, all the time, and he will govern with an attitude appropriate for the city of Pittsburgh. It’s why the Steelers first started doing work on Shula well before Tomlin resigned.
They will just have to wait a little while longer.
