The Pittsburgh Steelers turned over a new leaf at quarterback last year with rookie Kenny Pickett.
The long-tenured starter in Ben Roethlisberger retired after the 2021 season, and it was time to find his hopeful long-term replacement.
Thus, the era of Kenny Pickett began.
Kenny would go on to have a decent rookie season. He would finish 7-5 as a starter with seven touchdowns to nine interceptions; his completion percentage would be 63%.
You tend to see a lot of jumps from rookies going into their sophomore year of play.
Why is that? They are adjusting. The speed of the game is much different at all levels, and especially for a QB. Quarterbacks in college are often not asked to read the entire field and find the open target. It is often simplified to one or two reads, and if they aren't there, they take off and run.
One NFL analyst is betting on a second year jump from Pickett and one other Steeler, as Bucky Brooks recently released his 2023 NFL All-Breakout Team.
And guess who headlined it?
None other than the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback, Kenny Pickett, himself.
Brooks says that Pickett has a ways to go before he matches the career of the "future Hall of Famer" in Roethlisberger. But he added that Pickett led four game-winning drives and three fourth-quarter comebacks over his 12 starts as a rookie.
Brooks also said Pickett displayed "accuracy, ball placement and anticipation to shred defenses as a pinpoint passer, the youngster could quickly earn a seat at the crowded table of star quarterbacks in the AFC."
Pickett is not the only Steeler to make this list, however, as Brooks also has wide receiver George Pickens on his list:
The second-round pick burst on the scene in 2022, piling up 51 catches for 801 yards and four touchdowns. Moreover, the 6'3 200-pounder displayed outstanding had-eye coordination with a series of jaw-dropping, acrobatic catches that piques the interest of the football world. With more playing time and an expanded role on the horizon, Pickens could enter the conversation as a top-10 receiver by the end of 2023.
That is quite the statement, and one that I'm sure Steelers fans are hoping comes to fruition.
If Pickett and Pickens could break-out in 2023 it may be reminiscent of some earlier days that Steelers fans witnessed between a quarterback and wide receiver not more a decade ago. It would also put them on the fast track to success as they would have two of the most important positions on offense sorted out for the foreseeable future.
