But when you have a history of being one of the most successful organizations in your business, it's easy to stick with what's always worked.
But with many saying that the Steeler way has grown stale, Mike Tomlin acknowledged that the change at OC in 2024 won't be like ones in the past:
Hiring Outside The Organization
"I want us to be versatile and dynamic," said Coach Tomin when asked what he's looking for in his new offensive coordinator. "Obviously, we've gotta score more points. I want to be able to keep defenses off balance. I want to utilize all the talent that we have at our disposal. I'm excited about this process and the talent pool out there, based on what I've seen thus far. I'm really open to kinda learning through this process, man, and seeing what people have to say about their visions. And so, certainly I have a vision of what it looks like, but certainly open to learning through this process."
The Steelers have made six different hires at OC over the past 20 years. Of those six, only Todd Haley was hired from outside the organization, with the other five coming via internal promotion, something coach Tomlin could have done after seeing some increase in productivity following the in-season change from Matt Canada to interim OC's Eddie Faulkner and Mike Sullivan.
But credit to Tomin and the Steelers organization for bucking tradition. The team likely realizes that they need a new voice in the room, one that can properly use the team's talent on the perimeter and get the most out of the QBs on the roster.
Who that is remains to be seen.
