The Pittsburgh Steelers never wavered on the candidates for their starting QB in 2024.

Connections were made because of an oc hiring, and comments from credible insiders that even moved the betting lines.

But per Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, Pittsburgh has no intention of looking anywhere other than in-house for the answers to the QB situation:

In any event, the Steelers are not interested in bringing in a quarterback who wants to be a starter. That would include Justin Fields and Kirk Cousins, and probably even Russell Wilson, who has a connection with the Steelers. They are committed to giving Pickett a third season to see if he is the guy to do more than just win a playoff game — something they haven’t done in a franchise-record seven years.

Dulac's report aligns with the rhetoric that has come from the top in Pittsburgh. Whether it was Mike Tomlin saying "Yes" when asked if Pittsburgh’s starting QB was on the team following their playoff loss, or owner Art Rooney proclaiming his belief in Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph while doing radio hits.

But after the Steelers hired Arthur Smith, there was an obvious connection linked between the team and Smith's former QB in Tennessee, Ryan Tannehill, who is entering free agency

Then came Adam Schefter's report that Mike Tomlin was a "very big fan" of presumptive trade candidate and Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields during his draft process, while adding that Pittsburgh will certainly add a QB in the draft or free agency.

And while those scenarios could still happen, they would be signing with an understanding that Pickett or Rudolph will be starting in 2024.

But maybe it's all a smoke screen and Pittsburgh is plotting a big move.

I wouldn't hold your breath though, as we have nearly 100 years of precedent that says such a move is out of character.
