The Pittsburgh Steelers and Mike Tomlin are singularly focused this week.
A playoff game against the Baltimore Ravens awaits, and while there have been questions about who will start at QB this weekend, all signs point to a continuation of Russell Wilson in the saddle.
But should he lose, that's likely to change in 2025, and there's already one name generating a lot of buzz…
Aaron Rodgers To Pittsburgh in 2025?
“I think we have seen Russell Wilson hit a wall, said Peter King on Mad Dog Sports Radio. "Whether Mike Tomlin is even thinking about, I'm sure he's not right now, thinking about 2025. They got a playoff game coming up, but if I were the Pittsburgh Steelers, knowing that I've got Cam Heyward, TJ Watt, I've got guys on defense with their expiration dates not long in the future. I would want to come in and try to get a quarterback who can make me competitive with Baltimore and Cincinnati in 2025. That guy to me would be Aaron Rodgers.”
Before people think this is too far-fetched, there's history to consider between Rodgers, the Steelers, and Mike Tomlin. Rodgers has fawned over the leader that Tomlin is, made sure to acknowledge the history and lore of the franchise, and noted on multiple occasions how much he likes playing against the Steelers.
"We're playing an Aaron Rodgers-led group on offense and that means certain things. When you’ve got a quarterback who's had the resume that he has, and has had the type of success that he's had, it's a challenge, regardless of who the eligibles are," Tomlin said of Rodgers ahead of their matchup against the New York Jets earlier this season…
"…We've been in stadiums with him. It's no different than your playing guys you know, like Matt Stafford or some guys within our division, Lamar [Jackson] and Joe Burrow. There's too much water underneath that bridge. Familiarity, not only with what he's doing, but with what's going on around him, that allows him to make some of the no look, throws and things that that we all have appreciated over the years."
Now if Russell Wilson goes on to beat the Ravens and put together an impressive performance on Saturday, the Rodgers rumors are all for not. There is also Justin Fields to consider, who despite the fact that he could experience a strong market in free agency, aims to stick with the Steelers…
“I want to be here,” Fields told TribLive. “I’m kind of tired of learning a new offense every year. This will be my third in four years. Of course I’d love to be back, but that’s all up to God at the end of the day. I’ll be where God wants me to be.”
There are lots of answers to be learned after this weekend.
