The Pittsburgh Steelers wanted Justin Fields to be their QB for the 2025 season.
He was their number one target until it became clear that he wanted to test the market and see what he could fetch elsewhere, which netted him a job with the New York Jets.
Well, after trading for a Superstar WR and with plenty of cap space left to work with, the Steelers turned to their backup plan, who will have a bust in canton one day…
Steelers sign QB Aaron Rodgers to one year deal
The move came after Justin Fields wouldn't commit, because the Steelers wouldn't commit, and the Jets swooped in and gave him the contract he was seeking, and more importantly, a solidified starting job.
Sources told A to Z Sports, that Fields wouldn't sign in Pittsburgh unless they confirmed they wouldn't bench him or draft his successor in April's draft.
That was confirmed by Adam Schefter of ESPN, who said Fields would not commit until he received assurances of the starting job, which the Steelers obviously decided against.
Insert Aaron Rodgers, who became a clear candidate to be the team's 2025 QB with reports of him and Mike Tomlin getting together in search of a deal…
Aaron Rodgers also has emerged as a quarterback option for Pittsburgh, league sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Rodgers and the Steelers are expected to talk, sources told Schefter, and explore a union between the four-time MVP and longtime coach Mike Tomlin.

So after months of speculation, a future first-ballot Hall of Famer is joining the Pittsburgh Steelers. The move is polarizing, to say the least. Rodgers is a year removed from an Achilles tear and he also isn't known for being the best leader in a locker room.
We do know that he and Mike Tomlin have always had a friendly relationship and Mike Tomlin, in a similar manner to last year, was certainly the key cog in the signing of Rodgers.
Tomlin and Rooney call the shots in Pittsburgh and if they want someone they will get him. And so that's how it went down. The recently turned 41-year-old signal-caller is aiming to take the very team he beat to win his lone Super Bowl back to the Promised Land in search of their seventh Lombardi Trophy.
