It's not quite a Christmas miracle, but after one of the scariest-looking ankle injuries you will see, Alex Highsmith is preparing to return this week.

A pivotal piece for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Highsmith's absence against the Cleveland Browns was felt tremendously in a disappointing loss last Thursday.

And per HC Mike Tomlin, they could be getting him back in a virtual must-win against the Cincinnati Bengals:

Tomlin Bullish on Highsmith's return

"With that understanding from a health standpoint, we got Alex Highsmith leaning in on a return," said Tomlin on Tuesday. "We'll let his participation and the quality of that participation be our guide in terms of whether he gets back in or to what degree he gets back in. We have some other guys who are working their way back to us, like Corey Trice and Montravius Adams that may have an opportunity this week as well. Again, we'll leave the leave the door ajart for those guys. Man, there is strength in numbers and obviously, we need all the expertise that we can get as as the road gets narrow and this competition gets thick as we move into December."

Highsmith's injury against the Washington Commanders left many with a pessimistic outlook, but it turned out to be a low ankle sprain, with a timeframe of two to three weeks of missed action.

And so far Highsmith has missed exactly two games, meaning he's actually ahead of schedule as it relates to his timetable. We'll see what this week's post-practice injury report has to say before making any final declarations about his availability on Sunday.
