The biggest question surrounding the 2025 Pittsburgh Steelers is who will be the starting QB come September.
There have been plenty of rumors, hearsay, and even subtle signs from coaches as to who will be back in 2025 between Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.
But according to owner Art Rooney, it will have to be one or the other…
Art Rooney envisions only one of Russell Wilson & Justin Fields being back in 2025
"After the coaching staff is in place, the priority will be the quarterback position for sure. We have some decisions to make there and I thought both Russ and Justin showed promise in certain stretches during the season, and I think they're both capable of being starters in this league. So, we have decisions and they have decisions too…
"…I think both of them see themselves as starters and I don't know that they wanna share the same job again next year. So, I would say most likely we probably don't wind up bringing them both back."
It's a clear stance from Rooney, and it confirms what many have suspected since the outset of last season. Pittsburgh was never going to bring in two QBs on one year prove it deals and then re-up both of them the following season.
Russell Wilson and Justin Fields both finished with winning records,, but after dropping five in a row to end the season and being 10 years the senior of Justin Fields, it's easy to see why the Steelers brass including HC Mike Tomlin are changing their turn as it pertains to Fields…
"I thought that the way that he managed his professional circumstances was really impressive," said Tomlin when asked if Fields could be a 17-game starter and have pole position heading into 2025. "I thought he brought an urgency to his day-to-day work, regardless of his role. I thought he got continually better within our system of ball. Throughout the process, I thought the way he conducted himself, makes that a legitimate thought or idea at this juncture."
There is a missing piece in the equation and that would be the draft. The Steelers might not take another swing atop the draft when it comes to QB, but a late-round acquisition can't be ruled out.
Either way, the Steelers have to solve a woe that has been a thorn in their side since Big Ben hung up his cleats.
