The Pittsburgh Steelers have been doing a lot of shuffling of the roster over the past 24 hours ahead of their big matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers.
After reuniting with a veteran as a late birthday gift, the writing was on the wall for WR and special teamer Ben Skowronek, yet he was elevated to the active roster as opposed to being released from the practice squad.
Now we know why:
Steelers Make Flurry of Roster Moves
Roster moves continued for the Steelers on Wednesday when the team signed receiver Jaray Jenkins and tight end Matt Sokol to the practice squad. The team also placed receiver Ben Skowronek on the Reserve/Injured List. Skowronek, who was elevated from the practice squad for the Falcons and Broncos games, was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft, the 249th overall pick. He appeared in 45 games for the Rams, starting 12, while pulling in 58 receptions for 575 yards. He was traded to the Houston Texans this offseason. – Teresa Varley, Steelers
Pittsburgh played the NFL rules like a fiddle here, but with Tyler Matakevich and Ben Skowronek now both headed to the injured reserve, the re-signing of James Pierre, Jaray Jenkins, and Matt Sokol all became paramount.
And because of the team's decision to elevate and then place Skowronek on the reserve, they now have an open roster spot on the active 53, meaning another signing, and one of stature could be on the way.
