Bill Cowher knows a thing or two about quarterbacks and Pittsburgh Steelers football.
And while the team he used to coach has a preferred choice of Aaron Rodgers, Cowher isn't as sold.
And boy did he have his reasons…
Bill Cowher prefers Russell Wilson to Aaron Rodgers amidst retirement rumors
"You have a chance to get Aaron Rodgers," Cowher said on the Dan Patrick Show. "Can he still throw it? Yes. Is he mobile enough? I think so. But does he really want to play? The longer you wait, you just have to wonder where is his heart and how much does he really want to do it. I always think when, when somebody starts talking about retirement, they've already checked the box. So they've checked out to some degree…
"…I personally think that Russell Wilson is your best choice. It's gonna be a better offensive line room with [Troy] Fautanu coming back and moving Broderick [Jones] to left tackle."
Cowher had me until he said he would take Russ over Rodgers because of the offensive line. We have no idea what the line will look like in 2025. Sure, Troy Fautanu looked good before his season-ending injury. The problem is, he made one start.
What about Broderick Jones? Well ok, the Steelerts finally, after two whole seasons kick him back to his natural position of left tackle. How do we know he picks up where he left off at Georgia, which was a talented but relatively raw prospect?
"I think you're looking at the best receiver corps you're gonna have in a long time, in terms of if they can keep George Pickens or not, added Cowher. "That'll be the next conversation that you will have to have. Roman Wilson was a guy they were counting on last year. Calvin Austin Ill stepped up. I think the offense as a whole, and with Arthur Smith in his second year, in theory, should take a step forward."
In theory, Cowher is right. But the last we heard of Arthur Smith and Russell Wilson is that they couldn't stand each other and had a poor working relationship.
I understand that fawning over a quarterback with one foot in and one foot out is a bad look. But the Steelers are more likely to run it with Mason Rudolph, Skylar Thompson and a rookie in their QB room than to bring back Russell Wilson.
