An ecosystem but on moving parts that make a whole, a successful professional football team relies on a delicate balancing act of characters and egos among coaches, players, and front office members.
And after Pittsburgh Steelers Pro Bowl WR Diontae Johnson publicly endorsed Mason Rudolph to be the team's starting QB, team captain Cam Heyward made sure to put him in his place:
Stay in Your Lane
"We can't play GM", Heyward said on his podcast Not Just Football after hearing what Johnson said about Pittsburgh's QB situation. "The players have to play, the coaches gotta coach, and we'll see where we're at. I don't like–Kenny got hurt and it opened up a window for Mason to play. Mason played well in his time…
"…I don't know what the 2024 Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback [situation] is gonna look like", Heyward added, "but we'll see what happens. They've got to duke it out. They've got to find out what's gonna go on moving forward".
Heyward's latest episode premiered shortly after Coach Tomlin's press conference, one where he noted that Kenny Pickett would have the upper hand heading into 2024, and be the starting QB. However, the team intends to re-sign Mason Rudolph and have an open competition.
But as Heyward said, who starts and who sits is for the coaches, GM, and owner to decide and for Diontae Johnson to accept no matter the decision.
