The Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to get back a ton of key pieces ahead of Sunday's marquee matchip against the Washington Commanders.
According to HC Mike Tomlin, Nick Herbig, Zach Frazier, and Cordarrelle Patterson are all injured players who are slated to return to practice this week.
But one man has been waiting nine weeks to make his return to the Black and Gold and that would be DB Cam Sutton:
Cam Sutton could play all over the secondary
"That's to be determined, but I think that's one of the things that makes Cam [Sutton] so interesting and valuable to us is that he is a utility [Defensive] back," said Coach Tomlin when asked about Sutton fits into the defense. "His football intellect and physical capabilities is such that he can play anywhere. And he has to be [able to] to be quite honest with you."
Sutton has done his best work when aligned as a slot corner or nickel back. But you can't put the veteran in a box, as he played most of his 2023 season as an outside CB for the Detroit Lions. And before serving his suspension, Sutton was playing a lot of safety during training camp and in the preseason.
So where will he play this year? All over:
"His last year for us, he was an outside corner, he was a nickel, he was a dime, he was capable of playing safety at times and allowed to move around and come down and do other things," added Tomlin on Sutton's capabilities. "And that versatility, that utility component, is a major attraction to us. I know there's been a lot of speculation, to be quite honest with you, about how he and [Current starting slot CB] Beanie Bishop might function. You know, it's really two separate discussions. Cam is capable of playing anywhere in the secondary, and so if people need to be concerned about reps or division of labor, I would advise everybody in the secondary to be on notice, because Cam is that versatile."
Now I don't think that players like Minkah Fitzpatrick, DeShon Elliott, and Joey Porter Jr. are on any sort of notice, but as Coach Tomlin said, the same can't be said for everyone else.
