Well, former Cincinnati Bengals star WR Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson, is on board with what JPJ is selling:
Ocho buys what Porter is Selling
“Me for sure,” Porter told The Athletic's Mark Kaboly when asked who is the best CB in the league following an OTA practice last week. “There are a lot of good DBs in this league,” Porter said. “Nobody was doing what I was doing going against WR1s the entire year and locking him down. I don’t care if I am mentioned in there or not because they are going to hear my name eventually.”
An honest assessment of where he stands, others may have rolled their eyes at the comment, but not Ocho:
"I like it," Ocho said on Tuesday night's episode of Nightcap with Shannon Sharpe. "If you're gonna talk, you got to walk it. Ask your pops, Joey Porter, ask your pops how we used to go at it. One of the greatest trash talkers of all time in Joey Porter, much respect to him. But I like this. I like this. Put the league on notice. This is what you got to do, come out, create you some bulletin-board material…
"…Now what you got to do, even though you're a Steeler I love you to death, you got to follow in the footsteps of some of the greatest that have come through there. Now if you're gonna talk it like that, now you got to come and show up like somebody that I know… There's a great 24 that gave me hell for a decade straight in Ike Taylor, a great one. So if you gonna talk it, all you got to do is walk it."
Great comments from Ocho, there is no reason to believe that JPJ can't back up his words with his play. Whether it was the Steelers being more polarizing on the other side of the ball or him being a rookie, I'm not sure many realize just how good Porter was in his inaugural campaign.
Among all corners who were targeted at least 50 times, Porter allowed a completion percentage of a mere 47.4%, which was the best among all active CBs in the league, per PFF. He was so dominant, that only two times all year did a WR corps allocate more than 50 air yards against him.
If that continues in 2024, and across a full slate of games, Porter Jr.'s statement won't look so crazy after all.
One 49ers WR is off the board, but another may be for the Steelers taking following latest NFL News
An option may have reemerged.
