The Pittsburgh Steelers have yet to see what either Russell Wilson or Justin Fields will look like in a black and gold uniform.

But if we know anything about the NFL, it's that it's never too soon to look ahead.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler and NFL Media's Rich Eisen did just that when talking about Dak Prescott to Pittsburgh:

Dak Prescott to Pittsburgh in 2025?

“Yeah, I’m thinking of Pittsburgh, right? Like, Russell Wilson, he may play great, but he’s on a one-year, $1 million minimum deal, right? And Justin Fields doesn’t have his fifth-year option picked up. Maybe he’s [Dak Prescott] a long-term answer,” Fowler said recently on This Is Football.

Fowler stokes a good fire here, as the Steelers in general, but especially at the QB position are in a spot where they can re-tool the position group with ease. Russell Wilson's one-year vet minimum deal combined with Justin Fields playing on the final year of his rookie contract after Pittsburgh declined his fifth-year option, makes separation after the season relatively easy if things don't go to plan.

But even if they did, it's going to be hard to turn down Dak Prescott if he truly hits the open market, which is more and more likely.

“When I think of Dak, he’s one of those in the top paid that haven’t won, that I think can,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. “I think there are a handful or more of quarterbacks playing who haven’t won a Super Bowl that will win a Super Bowl. I think Dak is one of them. I’m firm there… We are where we are, locked and loaded for this season.”

With the Cowboys seemingly aligned with Pittsburgh in terms of an all-or-nothing kind of year, Prescott will fetch a huge market when free agency rolls around next March, and the Pittsburgh Steelers could be atop that list.

“What happens if the guy they went ahead and gave pole position to [Dak Prescott] doesn’t work out? What if they get a look at Justin Fields and say he’s not the guy,” Rich Eisen said on The Rich Eisen Show. “Maybe the Steelers are all in. Right now their offense costs nothing. I don’t even think it’s $15 million. They’ll have the money to give Dak a multiple of that. I think the Steelers might be in on Dak and let him finish his career in Pittsburgh.”

I believe a scenario where Pittsburgh adds a veteran QB as opposed to a rookie is the likelier of the two. The 2025 class, at least to this point, isn't heralded like the 2024 or even 2023 class, mirroring more of the 2022 class where Pittsburgh selected Kenny Pickett.

I doubt the Steelers will make that kind of move again.
