The noise surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers and the future of Mike Tomlin has become increasingly loud over the last few seasons, and especially this offseason.
But as long as his players have his back, Mike Tomlin will have his spot in Pittsburgh for as long as he wants it.
DeShon Elliott's recent comments further prove that…
DeShon Elliott explains what it's like to be a Steeler
"You walk in the building, and honestly, it's hard to describe the feeling," Elliott told Teresa Varley of Steelers.com. "Just knowing that when a coach talks to you, he's not talking to you just to check a box. He's talking to you because he actually cares. If I'm talking to Mike T, it's about my family or the things I have going on at home, like my dad. They've reached out to try to help me with that. It feels like something different for me. I really love being here."
Mike Tomlin hasn't lasted nearly two decades as the Steelers' head coach because of his gameplanning, defensive playcalling, in-game adjustments or his clock management. In fact, all of that can be criticized with Mike Tomlin.
What he's known for is being the best players coach in the NFL. For leading his players via actions and words that win them over on a weekly, monthly, and obviously, a yearly basis.
That doesn't mean he is, nor should he be immune to criticism, but when polls come out every year that have players saying they would like to play for Coach Tomlin as much if not more than the majority of the head coaches in the league, it only helps his case.
And for the Rooneys, right or wrong, that kind of stuff matters, They take pride in the fact that they only have three head coaches since 1969. So while everyone else is tired of 10-7 and first-round exits, the bottom line is only going up, and if players like Elliott, who signed as a free agent in 2024, are still bought in, the Steelers brass will be to.
