The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to kick off their home opener against the Los Angeles Chargers in a mere matter of minutes.
Both the Chargers and Steelers have seen their "starting" (quotes for Russell Wilson) QBs deal with injury concerns throughout the week.
But perhaps more worrisome for Pittsburgh, the status surrounding rookie Troy Fautanu:
Troy Fautanu, Russell Wilson among Inactives vs. Chargers
The writing was on the wall for both of these players, especially after Saturday's surprise report that Fautanu was ruled out and would be placed on injured reserve following a knee injury that occurred during Friday's practice.
As for Russell Wilson, it was rinse and repeat from last week when listening to coach Tomlin discuss the QB situation in Pittsburgh during his weekly presser:
“As I sit here today [Russ] is not scheduled to participate fully in practices so we’re readying ourselves around Justin and We’ll stay in that mindset until something else happens… “…Hypotheticals are a waste of time," said Tomlin.
What comes next is largely determined by the outcome of Saturday's game against the Chargers. Even if Russell Wilson is a full participant during next week's set of practices, it's going to be hard for him to unseat Justin Fields if he wins the season opener and heads into the quartermark of the year with an undefeated record.
"My position in regard to the pecking order and depth chart has not changed and it won’t until the other guy [Russ] gets healthy, and then we’ll give it a real consideration, said Coach Tomlin. "Until then I won’t speculate. I don’t know how many ways I can tell you guys that.”
