The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Joey Porter Jr. to do great things for the franchise.
More than just a feel-good story, Pittsburgh believes Peezy Jr. can be one of the best corners in the league, evident by his draft positioning.
But according to Porter himself, his goals and aspirations are much greater than that:
Joey Porter Jr. wants to be in the GOAT conversation:
“I want to be one of those guys that are in the conversation for best cornerbacks to ever play the game,” Porter Jr. told The Pivot Podcast. “I don’t play the game for the money part. When I grew up, my dad already had it. It was never a stress for me to make a certain amount of money to live comfortably. The game plan my mom and dad set for us was perfect. I play the game for those types of reasons. I want to put on a gold jacket, I want to win three Super Bowls. You know, I want to be the Defensive Rookie of the Year, All-Pro, make the Pro Bowl, all the stuff my dad has done. I want to do that too but to my own extent.”
They say if your goals don't scare you, they aren't big enough. So apparently, the NFL doesn't strike enough fear into the heart of Porter Jr. making him crave the pressure in other ways.
But in all seriousness, it may be a little premature for most rookies to talk about where they will be down the road, but Joey Porter Jr. isn't most rookies.
As we know, he comes from an NFL home and has been groomed by a potential Hall of Famer since he was born.
In my opinion, anything short of one-upping his father would be too easy for Porter Jr. He's a competitor at the end of the day. And we knew that before these comments.
All you had to do was watch him in training camp and then double down in his Steelers debut.
So the time for career reflection may be years down the road for JPJ, but if he shines as early as his rookie year, that GOAT conversation may not be so lofty after all.
