The Pittsburgh Steelers wanted Justin Fields more than any other free agent QB this cycle.

But when it became clear that Fields wanted assurances from the Steelers that they were unwilling to meet, his testing of the market was always going to happen.

And now they have lost out on him and arguably the best free agent signal caller out via Sam Darnold, with only two viable candidates left…

Justin Fields signs with Jets, Sam Darnold with Seahawks

Justin Fields reached agreement on a two-year, $40 million deal with the Jets that includes $30 million guaranteed. Deal negotiated by David Mulugheta of Athletes First.

So here's the 411. Fields has questions about the Steelers' loyalty. He couldn't  gain assurance from the Steelers brass when it came to him keeping the starting role, so he wants to test the market, potentially drive up the Steelers' price, and make them pay to ensure his spot.

They were unwilling to meet either one of his demands, both in the team specifics and monetarily.

Sam Darnold was likely to be in the mix but one of the worst kept secrets was his signing with the Seattle Seahawks. The Metcalf trade sets up an easy return for Russell Wilson, and now, while there has been a lot of smoke, there is a serious fire surrounding Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers, with he and Wilson looking like the only veteran options remaining for Pittsburgh.

Aaron Rodgers also has emerged as a quarterback option for Pittsburgh, league sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Rodgers and the Steelers are expected to talk, sources told Schefter, and explore a union between the four-time MVP and longtime coach Mike Tomlin.

So the Steelers' backs are now against the wall. They will either have to decide on bringing back Russell Wilson or signing Aaron Rodgers unless they go all the way off-course with Daniel Jones.

The coming hours should tell a lot about which direction the Steelers go at QB.
