Justin Fields led the Pittsburgh Steelers to victory against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, but it wasn't done in a stellar performance.
When asked who would start next week against the Denver Broncos, HC Mike Tomlin kept his cards close to his vest.
But for Justin Fields, it's the least of his concerns:
Justin Fields Only Wants to Win
"I'm not even worried about that," said Fields when asked if he had done enough to reignite the QB competition. "I just came in wanting to win, and I'm glad that we're leaving here with the win. So in terms of who's starting, who's not, all I want to do is win at the end of the day. So, yeah, I'm really not even going to get into all that. You know, 'who's going to start' yada yada. At the end of the day, I came here to win, no matter if I was gonna throw for 300 yards, 100 yards, no yards, like I came here to win. So that's the only focus I have."
If Russell Wilson is healthy, it's hard to envsion a world in which Fields starts. When you look at the box score, it doesn't blow you away, but it wasn't bad either.
Fields was efficient, completing passes at a high clip of nearly 74%, but his 17 competitions only afforded 153 yards in the air.
He also had a few dynamic runs, and ones that saved a drive or two, but the issue that plagued Fields all preseason cropped again and not once, not twice but three times.
Two bobbled QB exchanges and a Butterfingers situation on a QB sneak attempt on 4th down were a part of the experience. Ball security is job security and that was missing on Sunday.
And look, Russell Wilson has been Mike Tomlin's guy all along.
But if Fields threw for 300 yards, ran for 100 more, accounted for 5 TDs and blew out the Falcons, I think the conversation looks very different.
Instead, expect Russell Wilson to reassume his pole position when healthy.
