The Pittsburgh Steelers are 2-0 and preparing for their home opener against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.
The question everyone wants to be answered: When will Russell Wilson be ready to make his regular-season debut?
HC Mike Tomlin answered that question the only way he knows how on Tuesday:
Fields Preparing to Start vs. Chargers
“As I sit here today [Russ] is not scheduled to participate fully in practices so we’re readying ourselves around Justin and We’ll stay in that mindset until something else happens… “…Hypotheticals are a waste of time," said Tomlin.
For Fields, this marks three straight appearances as the starter, and if he wins, at home, in front of Steeler nation, and with Millions watching as the marquee CBS game, that all but solidifies him for the job going forward, even if Mike Tomlin isn't into speculation:
"I'm not talking hypotheticals," said Tomlin when asked if Fields has earned the starting QB job. "We've got one of those two guys available to us as I stand here today. So it is a waste of my time to speculate and hypotheticals and all of that. Justin's got a game to get ready for this week, and so I'm not doing him any justice by talking hypotheticals. I want him focused. I'm focused on the next task, and until Russell gets to a state of readiness where he's a consideration, I won't be speculating on any of that in any way…
"…My position in regard to the pecking order and depth chart has not changed and it won’t until the other guy [Russ] gets healthy, and then we’ll give it a real consideration. Until then I won’t speculate. I don’t know how many ways I can tell you guys that.”
So for Fields, he knows he has to keep looking over his shoulder if the offensive performances mirror or get worse than what they have been in the first two weeks.
But a statement win, at home, all but ends the discussion, whether Wilson is healthy ot not.
