The Steelers are at the point in the season where any spark of momentum will feel like a jolt of electricity.
And with an offense that is all out of answers, the team is turning to defensive changes on the depth chart as a source of inspiration.
The problem is, this is a prime example of too little, too late:
Insert Benton, Martinez
Benton has been one of the best players on the entire defense this season and should have been starting from day one. The Steelers like to work their rookies in slowly, but Benton has been a force since training camp and that has carried over into the regular season. Benton has recorded an impressive 74.9 PFF grade and made the most of his limited snaps:
As for Martinez, the veteran LB has yet to play a considerable role for the Steelers, but teams have been targeting Mykal Walker in coverage following the losses of Cole Holcomb and Kwon Alexander:
Tight ends have feasted over the middle of the field since Walker was inserted to the lineup, with Cardinals TE Trey McBride going for eight receptions, 89 yards, and a TD and Patriots TE Hunter Henry catching only three passes, but for two touchdowns.
That's no shot at Walker, as he is a downhill player who was never supposed to be in this role, but it’s the fact of the matter. How much better Blake Martinez will do is yet to be seen, but it can't get much worse at this point.
