It was just five days ago when Pittsburgh Steelers HC Mike Tomlin gave an unexpected injury update during his weekly press conference.
Coach Tomlin announced that Kenny Pickett was dealing with an ankle injury, but he wasn't expected to be limited in practice.
And he wasn't, participating fully all week, and looking just fine against the Cardinals…
Until he didn't:
Kenny Pickett to Miss Minimum of 2-4 Weeks
Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette was the first to report that the Kenny Pickett injury was serious, with Adam Schefter of ESPN and Ian Rapoport of NFL Media backing up the claims.
But per multiple sources and Dulac, there is a concern that Pickett's injury may be even worse than anticipated, as he will now have ankle surgery that could render him inactive anywhere between 2-6 weeks which would effectively end his season should the timetable be closer to the latter.
Here is the play where Pickett was injured. You can see how he got rolled up on when attempting to make a play at the goal line.
The play has drawn some criticism from former players, with Booger McFarland of ESPN saying: “He’s got to be smarter than that,"
I would disagree. Say what you want about Pickett, but he's a gamer and willing to do whatever it takes to win. That's part of the reason why Pittsburgh chose him in the first place.
It's just that in this case, that competitiveness may have come with a cost.
