NFL insider wonders if it's time for the Steelers to 'take a big swing' and make a blockbuster trade for Super Bowl-winning QB

For the first time in a while, the Pittsburgh Steelers are open season at the QB position.
Sure Justin Fields is the number one contender in terms of who starts in 2025, but the team quite literally has only one QB on the roster.
So a lot of names have been flying around, including Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford…
Matthew Stafford named trade candidate for Steelers
This week some pro-Wilson narratives surfaced, and my sense is that probably wouldn’t be very well received by the Steelers as they mull their future at the position. As for Fields, I feel like they’d like to keep working with him, but I don’t see them just handing him the starting job for 2025, if he’s back, my guess is it’d be with Fields needing to compete to earn playing time. Meanwhile, you’ve got T.J. Watt turning 31, and Minkah Fitzpatrick turning 29, and that makes you wonder if it’s time for the team to take a bigger swing on a guy like Stafford.

Stafford just turned 37 but he's shown zero signs of slowing down. The Los Angeles Rams were an afterthought by many coming into the 2024 season, yet Stafford helped lead them to within a play of the NFC championship game.
The Rams roster is still in the middle of a rebuild after winning the Super Bowl during the 2021-2022 season. They have already said they will be trading Triple Crown-winning WR Cooper Kupp, and given the fact that Stafford has a combined $4m in guaranteed money over the next two years of his contract, he makes for an enticing trade option for any QB needy team.
And to be clear, if Stafford is on the Steelers' radar, it's not close in terms of him being their best shot at winning a Super Bowl. Not only has he done it recently, but his arm is still as live as ever.
So time will tell if the Steelers are serious, but if there's even a chance that Stafford gets dealt, Pittsburgh should be calling Los Angeles nonstop.
