If you were around Sunday morning perhaps you were as surprised as everyone else when the news surrounding Matt Canada came out.
Despite all the discourse surrounding him and his scheme, the Steelers reportedly doubled down on his workload over the weekend, issuing him a closer role with QB Kenny Pickett.
But when Mike Tomlin was asked about it on Tuesday, he had a different response:
"NO"
When asked if offensive coordinator Matt Canada's role with the team has changed, coach Tomlin had an abrupt and short answer: "No." Coach T wouldn't add anything else to that, and didn't touch the subject for the rest of the press conference.
It should be noted that the report, which was released by Jordan Schultz, has yet to be confirmed by any other reporter or outlet, but Coach T is also the first person to refute it, something other reporters likely would have done from the jump.
One would also expect that a change to the coaching staff would occur if such a move was true, with the Steelers potentially letting current QB coach Mike Sullivan go if Canada was taking over.
But they haven't fired anyone, and no one associated with the organization has touched the subject, although it may become a popular topic when media availability opens up during Week 4 preparation.
In my opinion, I wouldn't be surprised if the truth lies somewhere in between here. I think that Canada probably has picked up a larger role in terms of 1-on-1 involvememt with Pickett, but most of the QB coaching still falls upon Sullivan.
Regardless, none of it matters as long as Pittsburgh;s offense continues to produce. Back-to-back weeks of 70+ yard TD passes from Pickett and back to back wins for Pittsburgh.
Coincience? I think not.
