Pittsburgh Steelers QB Kenny Pickett has shown growth on the field this offseason.
And while Steelers fans anxiously await to see if it carries over to the regular season, Coach Tomlin is confident.
Why? Because he sees a side of Kenny Pickett that few others do:
"It's Been Fun to Watch That Come Out"
"He is very vocal, emotional, fiery. It's been fun to kind of watch, that natural component of him come out," Coach Tomlin told The Rich Eisen Show on behalf of Kenny Pickett's growth as a leader. "You know, I'm cheating because of the proximity to his university, so I knew that about him. But it's cool to see that come out of him at the professional level."
"Have you counseled him on that front," asked Eisen.
"No, I think it has to be organic," answered Tomlin. "Obviously he and I spent a lot of time together talking about a lot of things, you know, tangible, and formal things but also intangible things relative to his position. There's a lot of similarities at times between our roles. We both get too much credit when things are going well and we both better be ready to absorb negativity when things aren't and so there's a lot to talk about."
Well, having covered Kenny Pickett for the duration of his career in Pittsburgh, and having interviewed him at the Senior Bowl, I would use a lot of adjectives to describe the signal caller, but "emotional" and "fiery" were not going to be in the description.
A stoic and calm personality, Pickett comes off cool as a cucumber with the media and on the field. But apparently, behind closed doors, he has a side we don't see. One that rallies his teammates and inspires confidence from his coaches.
And that's what matters most. Mature for a second-year signal caller, the intangible part of Pickett's game was and is always going to be his strong suit. So hopefully Kenny keeps being him, but a little intensity for the rest of us doesn't hurt either.
