The Pittsburgh Steelers might play in the Steel City, but their roots stem from Europe.
A family in the Rooney's whose homeland is in the UK, green runs deep for the owners of the Black and Gold.
And after a lot of rumors and hearsay, the NFL has confirmed that they are headed back in 2025…
Steelers to play in Ireland in 2025
“The Rooney's immigrated from Ireland back in the 1800s,” Steelers owner and team president Art Rooney II said to Sky Sports back in September. “There’s a long history, a long connection. On my mother’s side, my grandparents came over back in the 1920s, so a lot of relatives are still over in Ireland. I go back and visit them from time to time, and of course, my father wound up being the Ambassador to Ireland for a while. A lot of deep connections for us over there…"
…Sometime over the next few years, we’re really looking forward to playing a game over in Dublin.”
The move has been in the making for a while, as we heard rumblings as far back as this time last year, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell recently foreshadowed the event when speaking on the league's upcoming international plan:
"We are definitely going to Spain, we announced that," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said earlier this year. "We expect to return to Mexico City. We expect to return to Brazil. We will certainly be back in the U.K. And we're also looking at the potential of another game in the U.K. area in Ireland, possibly. That's a possibility. And we'll certainly be back here in Germany. So if that total's eight, that's what we're shooting for."
The Steelers do have a history of playing in Ireland, but never in a game with actual stakes. It's been close to thirty years since they played in the land of green, which was an exhibition game.
"We're hoping that sometime soon we'll be playing another game in Ireland," Steelers President Art Rooney II said. "We played back in the '90s, it was a preseason game. We expect next time we play a game in Ireland it will probably be a regular-season game. And who knows, it could be one of these years coming up soon."
