A simple look at the Pittsburgh Steelers projected depth chart leaves a lot ot be desired in the WR room.
And while no one knows how the room will look until the on-field play commences, there is reason to be skeptical, and yearning for a trade if you're a Steelers fan.
But according to GM Omar Khan, he's more than content with the state of the WR corps.
Khan Pleased with WR Room
"We just finished minicamp and I was just talking to Coach T. and a couple of the other guys in my department, and we were just saying how good we felt about that [WR] room," Khan told 93.7 The Fan. "Just the growth from when the offseason program started to where we are now. Even the improvements from the start of OTAs to now has really been awesome to see…
"…We like the group. We really, really do. And they're working hard. This was an important OTA and minicamp for us. Got a lot of new faces on offense and just seeing how they jell together, how they worked, and I can just tell you, it's trending really positively. It was awesome."
The new faces include rookie Roman Wilson, along with veteran presences; Van Jefferson, Quez Watkins, Cordarrelle Patterson, Scotty Miller, and the return of names like Calvin Austin III and of course the headliner of the group, George Pickens.
So look, I don't know about you, but that group doesn't exactly instill optimism in my forecast for the offense. Let's just say George Pickens misses time. Now your number one WR is Van Jefferson, your number two is an unproven rookie (Roman Wilson) and your third option is Calvin Austin III.
That is not acceptable in the modern NFL, no matter how much Pittsburgh wants to run the ball.
And that's why Pittsburgh has been so heavily rumored to be involved in a WR trade, with those rumors heating up again after the latest set of antics or announcements from San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk.
And to be fair to Khan, what else is he supposed to say? "The group sucks and so we will be moving Heaven and Earth to add another WR before the season starts." That just doesn't happen in the NFL, where coach and GM speak are as prevalent as the day is long.
