Polarizing NFL draft prospect reveals telling details regarding meeting between him and the Steelers at 2025 NFL Combine
A common mistake you will see this time of year from the media is reading too far into visits between draft prospects and teams. A common mistake you will see this time of year from the media is reading too far into visits between draft prospects and teams.
For example, many were surprised to learn that the Pittsburgh Steelers met with quarterbacks Will Howard and Quinn Ewers during Combine Week in Indianapolis.
In reality, however, it's not the meeting that should be surprising, rather what Ewers had to say about the meeting that should be garnering attention…,
Steelers didn't put Quinn Ewers on the board
"No, no they didn't put me on the board," Ewers told Aditi Kinkhabwala of CBS Sports. "Really [only] them and one other team that I didn't get on the board [with]. "I think they were just really trying to get to know me. I know they are going to be at the Pro Day for me and I'm sure we'll have conversations after or before then."
Typically, a major part of the 15-minute meetings that QBs have at the Combine involves testing their football intelligence. Teams often create game-like scenarios on a whiteboard or an iPad to see how well players can recall information and adjust to changes in a mock run.
The fact that Ewers said the Steelers didn't do that, means one of two things. Either they have no real intention of drafting him, or they already know everything they need to know when it comes to his mental acuity.
Drafting Ewers would drum up some controversy in Pittsburgh. A projected mid-round pick, the Steelers have a lot of other needs that are far more pressing than selecting a backup QB in the third or fourth round.
It's certainly better than reaching for one in the first however, something the Steelers have no intention of doing…
I will keep this one pretty simple, stop mocking a quarterback to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round. From everything I have heard, that just isn’t going to happen. The veteran quarterback market is the main priority for the Steelers, and it could focus on the retention of talent in that room from last week. That should be the immediate focus.
One quarterback in the draft that the Steelers do like is Ohio State signal caller Will Howard. He has been projected to go somewhere in the third to fourth round range. It wouldn't be overly shocking to see the Steelers bring Howard back home to Pennsylvania when April comes around.
