The Baltimore Ravens made a low-risk, high-reward move on Tuesday when they decided to trade for former Pittsburgh Steelers Pro Bowler Diontae Johnson.

Acquiring the talented wideout for a late day three pick and very little remaining salary to pay, Johnson can step in and be an immediate contributor on what was already one of the league's best teams.

That is, if he can manage to keep his emotions in check, something the Ravens are well aware of, and willing to take a shot on:

Ravens giving Johnson another chance

As for whether there’s any concern of Johnson’s history with the Pittsburgh Steelers and some reported instances of upheaval carrying over (including a “heated locker room argument with FS Minkah Fitzpatrick after the safety took issue with Johnson’s treatment of the coaches on the sideline;” and “seemingly walk(ing) away from the opportunity to recover" RB Jaylen Warren’s fumble in a game against the Bengals last season, per USA Today’s Steelers Wire), I’m told Johnson will have an opportunity to mold his own future in Baltimore. The feeling is that “people can grow up and mature and have their eyes opened" when in a new environment of hope and optimism. Still I’m told it’ll be “up to him” to make the most of this chance.

Johnson's tenure in Pittsburgh is clouded by the way things ended, but for the most part he was a productive player who kept to himself and made the requisite plays when called upon.

And just for the benefit of the doubt, last year was one to forget for all of the black and gold until the season was saved by Mason Rudolph, who carried the team to a postseason appearance against the Buffalo Bills.

Going on I.R. with a hamstring injury, having three different offensive coordinators and three different starting QBs, it was far from an easy situation in Pittsburgh for Johnson in 2023-2024.

But the headache that Johnson became finally outweighed his production and Pittsburgh sent him to the Carolina Panthers before they dealt him to Baltimore.

We'll see if he acts any different now that he's in a different shade of black and with two matchups in the backhalf of the season
