The NFL Draft is in the rearview, but the team-building process never stops.

After coming away empty-handed in the WR department over the course of the weekend, some wondered why Pittsburgh wouldn't take a shot on a WR given their history of draft picks, and relative unknown behind George Pickens and DK Metcalf.

Well, now we know why…

Steelers sign Robert Woods to one year deal

The former Super Bowl champion has seen himself play for multiple teams ever since winning the Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams in 2021. He had a one-year stint with the Tennessee Titans before spending the last two years with the Houston Texans.

Woods just turned 31 years old and at this point of his career is a slot WR who is a perfect match for the Steelers offense. His willingness to do the dirty work in terms of blocking and running clear-out routes, combined with his running route savvy and veteran prowess over the middle, makes him a great fit in Arthur Smith's offense.

The Steelers will now have a decision to make with this signing however. Last year, the team brought five WRs out of training camp and to the active roster. This year, it's safe to assume there are four locks…

  1. DK Metcalf
  2. George Pickens
  3. Roman Wilson
  4. Calvin Austin III

That leaves one final spot between Woods and a plethora of other candidates, most notably Ben Skowronek and Scotty Miller. The problem is, all four of the aforementioned players and Woods aren't exactly special teamers, unless that is what Roman Wilson will be required to do in 2025.

Either way, the Steelers needed a veteran presence and certified difference maker at the slot WR position. Calvin Austin III showed promise in the slot last year, but Pittsburgh prefers their veterans in that role (See Allen Robinson and Van Jefferson).

More depth is never a bad idea.
