Ever since the scoreboard went dark against the Baltimore Ravens, the clock on the Steelers QB decision for 2025 started.
And while there have been subtle signs in what direction the Steelers are leaning, Russell Wilson has almost been a forgot about option, especially in light of the coaching move the Las Vegas Raiders just made.
But according to Wilson himself, that's all a bunch of talk…
Wilson focusing on Pittsburgh
"I'm looking forward to hopefully going back to the Steelers and we'll see what happens with the rest," Wilson said. "I love it in Pittsburgh. I've been fortunate to play 13-plus years, and I've got a lot more ball left in me. I think staying healthy is always the thing. You've got to be healthy to play your best, and I feel great right now. Pete's going to be a great coach, obviously. He's great at what he does. But I'm focused on the Steelers."
When the Raiders announced that Pete Carroll would be their new head coach, many pegged Wilson as a potential fit in Vegas. The Raiders need a bridge QB, Russell Wilson is a free agent, and he and Pete Carroll won a Super Bowl together with the Seattle Seahawks.
But for the Steelers, they have a decision to make, and so far it's felt more like Justin Fields is their answer as opposed to Russell Wilson, and there's only room for one of them in 2025.
"After the coaching staff is in place, the priority will be the quarterback position for sure," said Steelers owner Art Rooney. "We have some decisions to make there and I thought both Russ and Justin showed promise in certain stretches during the season, and I think they're both capable of being starters in this league. So, we have decisions and they have decisions too…
"…I think both of them see themselves as starters and I don't know that they wanna share the same job again next year. So, I would say most likely we probably don't wind up bringing them both back."
Wilson did confirm that he and the Steelers were having contract discussions, but what Wilson wants and what the Steelers want could be two very different things, meaning a reunion may be his best bet in 2025.
