Every day that the Pittsburgh Steelers get closer to the start of the 2024 NFL season without acquiring another WR, the more the anxiety and anticipation among the fanbase grows.
The latest situation between Brandon Aiyuk and the 49ers is certainly enticing for Steelers fans, but following a workout video, the teasing is continuing.
That's because Russell Wilson was seen throwing with his former top option in Seattle, WR D.K. Metcalf.
Now this may be nothing other than two friends getting together for a pre-training camp workout, but there is at least one reason to believe that it could be something else.
During the pre-draft process, and shortly after the Steelers cleared $7m in cap space, (of which they still have) Metcalf was floated as a potential option for Pittsburgh, who were making calls on multiple targets.
They [Pittsburgh Steelers] called about Aiyuk and Sutton and have been rebuffed, at least with opening talks. Called about DK, I don't believe a trade would get done there until after June first (if one got done at all) –Benjamin Allbright, KOAColorado
Metcalf is a physical specimen who has two Pro Bowls to his name at only 26 years old. He and Russell Wilson formed one of the league's best QB-WR duos in the league from 2019 to 2021, including the best statistical year of Metcalf's career in 2020, where he was honored with second-team All-Pro accolades, and a Pro Bowl nod after recording a career-high 1,303 receiving yards and 10 scores.
Metcalf is still one of the most explosive WRs in the league and will always be a matchup nightmare given how physical, yet fast he is. There was concern that he would only be able to run routes on a vertical plane due to his stiffness, and while that may somewhat be true, being a one-trick pony has worked out well for him thus far.
Headed into the back half of a three-year extension that he signed in 2022, why Seattle would even consider trading Metcalf is beyond me, and it's why this workout video, while enticing, likely won't generate any real trade talk.
But it's always fun to imagine, and boy would the return of the "Moon-Ball" that made Russell Wilson so famous in Seattle look great in the black and gold and with his old friend.
