The offseason has just begun, and yet the rollercoaster of who will be the starting QB for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024 is all over the place.
In less than two weeks, we have seen the team become the favorites to trade for Justin Fields after credible reporting from ESPN's Adam Schefter, followed by a report that Pittsburgh's starting QB is already on the roster.
Well, putting two and two together and you can see how the latest rumor may make the most sense:
Wilson to Pittsburgh?
"We gotta work on the Steelers now,” Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson said on the latest episode of Nightcap. “A little birdie told me, and I said this many shows ago, Russell Wilson’s coming on over to the Steelers.”
Now, most of what Ocho says has to be taken with a grain of salt given his playful banter with Shannon "Unc" Sharpe on the show, but he's well connected given his decorated playing career and post-retirement media involvement.
But, either Vegas heard something similar from the same "birdie" or Ocho's words carry that much weight, because when the betting lines updated shortly after the ending of Nightcap, the Pittsburgh Steelers became the favorite at -250 to land Russell Wilson.
And while a team would be out of their mind to trade for Wilson given his contract, there is a belief around the league that he will be released, leaving him free to sign with the team of his choosing and likely for the league minimum given the fact that Denver would still owe him nearly $40m in guaranteed money.
To be clear, this scenario is the most likely of many of the rumors, but it doesn't mean Wilson will be the starter. Should Pittsburgh lose Mason Rudolph in free agency, the team will look to a veteran backup for Kenny Pickett.
Wilson fits the mold for such a role, but his signing would come with attention as a pometial "camp battle" between he and Pickett for starting QB in 2024.
That could either be "too much noise" for Pittsburgh, or the jolt of motivation they are looking to give Kenny Pickett.
Time will tell.
