Saturday's game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens could have a seismic impact on the future of Pittsburgh.
Questions about Mike Tomlin's tenure, how much longer players like Cam Heyward have, and of course, what happens at QB.
Well, according to Dan Graziano of ESPN, a bad showing by Russell Wilson on Saturday, could be his last in the Black and Gold.
Pressure is on Russell Wilson
“Oh it’s a fact," said Graziano on ESPN's Get UP when asked if it was a fact that Wilson needs to beat the Ravens to save his job. "I mean look there’s nothing really compelling them to bring him back. He’s on a one-year minimum salary deal. There was never any commitment beyond this year and if what happens at the end is they fall apart because he started playing poorly then they’ll just go find whatever next year’s Russell Wilson type solution is. I think he’s a guy they liked, but I don’t think there is any sure thing to be back there at all especially if they’re one and done in the playoffs”
Graziano is exactly right when he says the Steelers owe nothing to Wilson. The whole reason they acquired him was because it was a low-risk venture. Wilson signed a veteran minimum contract that lasted a total of one season. Not to mention there are other options for the Steelers to entertain, including a future first-ballot Hall of Famer…
“I think we have seen Russell Wilson hit a wall, said Peter King on Mad Dog Sports Radio. "Whether Mike Tomlin is even thinking about, I'm sure he's not right now, thinking about 2025. They got a playoff game coming up, but if I were the Pittsburgh Steelers, knowing that I've got Cam Heyward, TJ Watt, I've got guys on defense with their expiration dates not long in the future. I would want to come in and try to get a quarterback who can make me competitive with Baltimore and Cincinnati in 2025. That guy to me would be Aaron Rodgers.”
Oh and who can forget the fact that Justin Fields is only 25 years old, led the Steelers to a 4-2 start, and has zero aspirations of playing anywhere other than Pittsburgh in 2025:
“I want to be here,” Fields told TribLive. “I’m kind of tired of learning a new offense every year. This will be my third in four years. Of course I’d love to be back, but that’s all up to God at the end of the day. I’ll be where God wants me to be.”
So if Wilson doesn't play what might have to be his best game in the Black and Gold, he could be on his way to another team in 2025.
