The QB controversy finally came to a head for the Pittsburgh Steelers on Tuesday.
The team sits tied atop the AFC North with the Baltimore Ravens at 4-2 through one-third of the season, all with Justin Fields under center.
But with Russell Wilson now fully healthy, some wondered if now would be the time that HC Mike Tomlin made the switch to his QB 1 and team captain.
He just about did:
Russell Wilson in line to start vs. Jets
"Over the course of [last] week I got comfortable with [Wilson's] health," said Tomlin. "He's in consideration this week. We'll see where that leads us. Both guys are scheduled to work tomorrow. We'll work it day-by-day."
"It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with what Justin has done or has not done," said Tomlin when asked about why Russell Wilson is in consideration to start. "Justin has been an asset to us. Man last week, for example, his ability to utilize his legs, by design and by ad-lib, was a significant component of that game, he rushed for 50 plus yards and two touchdowns in the game. We're appreciative of that. We're appreciative of taking care of the ball, but we're just looking at all the people at our disposal the same way that we do at any position, with who we have a history with."
The move may come off as surprising given the fact that the Steelers are 4-2, tied for the division lead, fresh off a resounding win against the Las Vegas Raiders, and are set to take on a New York Jets team that is buzzing after trading for Davante Adams.
Not to mention Pittsburgh is set to be without yet another starting offensive lineman according to HC Mike Tomlin, as Zach Frazier is week to week and will miss the Jets game, leaving Russell Wilson as a sitting duck opposed to the mobile Justin Fields.
But Russell has always been Tomlin's preferred choice. He was named starter prior to the preseason, awarded team captaincy, and held his position as QB #1 on the depth chart all the way through Tuesday.
And now it looks like he will reassume that role, while making his starting debut.
