At long last, the Pittsburgh Steelers and T.J. Watt have come to an agreement.

Watt got what he wanted, and the Steelers did a good job to make sure they can be flexible financially.

That was revealed within the details…

T.J. Watt, Steelers agree to new 3 year contract

The deal comes just days before the team was slated to report to Latrobe, and it makes everyone happy. Watt wanted to be paid as the highest non quarterback in the league.

The Steelers however, didn’t want Watt to be extended too far into the future given the fact he is going into his age 31 season and has been injured three seasons in a row.

But by signing him to a three year deal, that ties him to the team through 2028, Watt now has a four year average of $36m which is also much more manageable for the team.

It’s rare that everyone gets what they want in a deal like this, and given the fact Watt signed for $108m guaranteed, the deal gives him more than $30m guaranteed compared to his former deal, but again, isn’t the fully guaranteed deal that can hamper franchises.

So what this really means, is that all of the hyperbole about trades, and rumors and discourse surrounding his future can come to an end.

There was a chance this got uglier. Lingered into camp and became a major distraction. But both sides, an exact week from the start of practice decided against that.

What this deal ensures, is that Watt will retire a Pittsburgh Steeler. Maybe he signs a much smaller, one to two year deal worth a fraction of this one when he’s in his mid 30s, but he and the Steelers have solidified themselves as partners for life after Thursday.
